After a 2nd place in 2015, the Atlético Mineiro fell under the pressure of the supporters and made huge changes in the club. They sacked Levir Culpi and brought the Uruguyan manager Diego Aguirre in his place and made high profile signing as ex Brazilian internationals Fred and Robinho, alongside Erazo who was signed to replace Jemerson who went to Monaco and Cazares to replace Giovanni Augusto who went for Corinthians. Aguirre who didn't impress in the first months was sacked after losing the Campeonato Mineiro title to América MG and being knocked out to São Paulo in the Copa Libertadores. Then they signed Marcelo Oliveiro who won the league title twice with their Rivals Cruzeiro and was Cup champions with Palmeiras. After more mediocre displays in the league, Marcelo Oliveira was sacked before the 2nd leg of the Copa do Brasil. This year they hired Roger, a relatively young manager who did a good job for Grêmio for Grêmio in 2015 and signed the ex-Sporting midfielder Elias and ex-Krasnodar defender Felipe Santana as the main signs of this year.
History
Atlético Mineiro founded on 25 March 1908 by twenty-two students from Belo Horizonte Despite having liberal, upper-class founders, the club opened its doors to players of every social class, establishing itself as a "people's club"Atlético has won the Campeonato Mineiro a record 43 times. At national level, the club has won the Campeonato Brasileiro once and has finished second on five occasions, third on 6 occasions and fourth on 5 occasions. Atlético has also won one Copa do Brasil, one Copa dos Campeões Estaduais and the Copa dos Campeões Brasileiros. In international club football, Atlético has won the Copa Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana once each, and a record two Copa CONMEBOL. Atletico is playing in the Libertadores for the fifth consecutive year, a record in Brazilian football.
Rivalries
Cruzeiro Esporte Clube: Both clubs are established in Belo Horizonte and make the biggest derby in Minas Gerais. The first match happened in 17 April 1921 when Cruzeiro was still called Palestra Italia won by 3-0. Atlético and Cruzeiro played 498 matches with Atlético winning 199 games against 163 from Cruzeiro and 131 draws.
Stadium
For most of Galo's history, they played in the Mineirão, but since 2012 uses the Arena Independencia and usually only plays in the Mineirão for high profile games. The Arena Independencia, also known as Horto have a capacity of 23.018 people with a field size of 105 × 68 meters.
Home City
Atlético Mineiro is located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil's 6th biggest city, with area of 331 km² and population of 2,502,557.The region was first settled in the early 18th century, but the city as it is known today was planned and constructed in the 1890s, in order to replace Ouro Preto as the capital of Minas Gerais. The city features a mixture of contemporary and classical buildings, and is home to several modern Brazilian architectural icons, most notably the Pampulha Complex. In planning the city, Aarão Reis and Francisco Bicalho sought inspiration in the urban planning of Washington, D.C.
Squad
Goalkeepers
Victor came to Atlético Mineiro in 2012, from Grêmio and was part of the World Cup squad in 2014. He was crucial for the Copa Libertadores title next year saving penalties in the Quarter, semi and final.Altough he isn't playing as good as in 2013 and having many injuries he still have the support of all the fans. His backup is Giovanni who came from Marilia in 2011.Atlético's third goalkeeper is Uilson, who came from the youth category and was part of the Brazilian team in the 2016 Olympics.
Defenders
Leonardo Silva is Atlético's captain and came for the club in 2011, after being released by Cruzeiro. He scored the unarguably the most important goal in Atlético's history in the Copa Libertadores final in 2013, that sent the game to penalties. His centerback partner is Gabriel, who came from the youth category and showed promise after an injury crisys in the second half of the season. The Ecuador international Erazo who came from Grêmio in 2015 lost his place after injuries and some bad displays. The ex-Dortmund centerback ¨Felipe Santana came for free this season was supposed to be the solution of Atlético's woes in the defense but failed to make an impact.
Fabio Santos, Danilo and Leonan are the leftbacks. The first is an experienced fullback who was very succesfull for Corinthians, being the starter of the team that won the league in 2011 and the Libertadores and Club World Cup in 2012. Danilo was Atlético's nemesis in the Campeonato Mineiro final last year, as he scored in both legs of the final, He can also play as a left midfielder and a defensive midfielder. Leonan came from the youth category.
Marcos Rocha came from the youth category. He was loaned to América in 2011, and after he came back he was awardaded as the best right back in the league for 4 consecutive times. He's known for being amazing going forward and his long throw ins. Carlos Cesar is his backup, he's decent defensively and offers almost nothing going forward.
Midfielders
Rafael Carioca came for the club in 2014, from Spartak Moscow. He's known for his good technique and was named for the Team of The Season in 2015. He plays alongside Elias who came from Sporting, and is the marquee signing of Atlético this season. As options on the bench Atlético have Adilson who came from Terek Grosny and Ralph, Yago and Lucas Candido who are from the youth category
The ecuadorian international Cazares, who came from the Argentinian side Banfield wears the number 10, and he's the main playmaker of the team. Altough being very talented, he has a consistency problem and off field. The Venezuelan Otero, that has 23 appearences and 6 goals for his national team has freekicks as his biggest trait. Atlético also has the ex-Udinese player Maicosuel an fast and skillfull winger, the ex-Rubin Kazan playmaker Carlos Eduardo and last years Puskas nominee Marlone as other midfielders.
Forwards.
Robinho was the marquee signing last year, and he didn't disappoint. He's participating less of the creation of plays, playing closer to the goal as he was the topscorer of Brazilian football in 2015 with 25 goals. Fred has started this year on fire, having already scored 16 goals. He came from Fluminense in June and was the league's topscorer with 14 goals. His backup is Rafael Moura nicknamed as He-Man, altough he don't challenge Fred for the striker position, he proved to be a valuable option on the bench having already scored 5 goals. Luan usually plays as a Right Winger, but he can play as a playmaker or even as defensive midfielder. He's more known for his great workrate than his technique.
Manager
Roger Machado was a leftback for Grêmio between 1994 and 2003, and was at the same club that he made his name as manager. In 2015, he lead Grêmio to a surprising third place. But in 2016, after a bad semester, he decided to leave the club, even tough he had support from the fans and the board.

Expectations
Atléticano's' opinions
Who to keep an eye on?
Atlético relies on their powerful attack to win the league title, with experienced players like Robinho and Fred repeat their last years perfomance, where they both combined for 26 goals, only in the league. But just a good attack isn't enough to win a long competition, so Atlético young centerback Gabriel needs to step up to help the defense to concede less goals in the competition.
Where will the team end on the table?
We were never a good team in a round robin system, and Atlético's unbalanced team alongside our usually bad away record makes it harder to the team compete for the title. But anyway such an strong side alongside a good manager can make the team go at least for a Libertadores spot in the third place.
Why should other people support Atlético?
Atlético's last and only league title happened in 1971, and despite reaching the later stages of the Brazilian league Atlético a lot of times couldn't break the taboo. Since 2011 Atlético made a lot of expensive transfers to end the title-less streak, since that we won our first Libertadores and Copa do Brasil, but the league curse continued with the same script in 2011 and 2015, starting well, leading the table untill half of the league then dropping form and losing "easy" matches. If Atlético wants to win the league after 48 years Atlético needs to be more consistent and don't let the pressure of not choking again mess with the team mentality.
